Rise Above

Rise Above

“Happy is the man who finds a true friend, and far happier is he who finds that true friend in his wife.” – Franz Schubert

This weekend, I had the honor of writing and reading a poem for my dear, dear friends, Kyle and Jen. They started their new life together, and I wrote this silly poem for them. I hope you enjoy it and if you know them, please say congrats. If you don’t know them, that’s okay. Be sure that they are a true example of spending your life with your best friend. That’s important. Love you two.

Rise Above

Falling in love is easy to do,
staying in love is where you set
yourself apart –
it’s where you rise above
all others that say they are in love.

When you love somebody,
when you love your best friend,
nothing else matters in the end
except the person you love.

That person becomes your world.

Although nobody is perfect,
that person makes perfection seem attainable.

perfect perplexities perpetuate
though, you feel freedom
when you hold that person close –
arrhythmic beats of the heart find rhythm in rhathymia.

Laughs conjoin
and life’s simple and sweet moments
are shared with the one person that cares
about the next silly word
that is about to spill over their lingering lips.

When you are apart
you feel longing.
Your idiosyncrasies are so aligned
that when apart – you’re missing a part of yourself.

The joy of when you see their face
that next time
is something that makes your feelings feel funny,
but in that good way
where you embrace the stomach flutters.
You hug your inside with happiness.

Your face does that thing
where your lips rocket north
and your eyes jump out,
and your forehead wrinkles, tipping your age.

Reunited, you take turns watching each other sleep.
You both learn the lines of the other’s body,
memorizing everything you adore
and storing it in your mind for whenever you need a smile.

You do everything you can
to remember the details of your made memories
and add it to your personal picture show.

When you feel this way
you rise above all those others
who don’t have it as good as you,
because you found the love that was true.
